First Estimates of Hydrothermal Helium Fluxes in Continental Collision Settings: Insights From the Southeast Tibetan Plateau Margin
نویسندگان
چکیده
Continental regions are essential for the outgassing of deeply-sourced helium in response to volcanic and tectonic processes. However, fluxes remain largely unknown continental collision settings such as Tibetan Plateau. Here, we focus on hydrothermal degassing from Simao block, Southeast Plateau margin, report flux estimates (0.03 – 32) × 105 atoms m?2 s?1 3He (3.2 1010 4He, with mantle fractions up 2?3 orders magnitude greater than those stable continents. Geologically recent magma recharge beneath Quaternary volcanoes is proposed account high 3He/4He 7.24 Ra. Active tectonics driven by India-Asia possibly maintained efficient release crustal over geological timescales. These findings present first controlled processes settings.

متن کاملFluxes of dissolved organic carbon from California continental margin sediments
Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from marine sediments represent a poorly constrained component of the oceanic carbon cycle that may affect the concentration and composition of DOC in the ocean. Here we report the first in situ measurements of DOC fluxes from continental margin sediments (water depths ranging from 95 to 3,700 m), and compare these fluxes with measured benthic fluxes fro...
متن کاملTransition from continental collision to tectonic escape? A geophysical perspective on lateral expansion of the northern Tibetan Plateau
A number of tectonic models have been proposed for the Tibetan Plateau, which origin, however, remains poorly understood. In this study, investigations of the shear wave velocity (Vs) and density (ρ) structures of the crust and upper mantle evidenced three remarkable features: (1) There are variations in Vs and ρ of the metasomatic mantle wedge in the hanging wall of the subduction beneath diff...
متن کاملDifferential growth of the northern Tibetan margin: evidence for oblique stepwise rise of the Tibetan Plateau
Models of how high elevations formed across Tibet predict: (a) the continuous thickening of a "viscous sheet"; (b) time-dependent, oblique stepwise growth; and (c) synchronous deformation across Tibet that accompanied collision. Our new observations may shed light on this issue. Here, we use 40Ar/39Ar and (U-Th)/He thermochronology from massifs in the hanging walls of thrust structures along th...
متن کاملComparison of satellite-based evapotranspiration estimates over the Tibetan Plateau
The Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a major role in regional and global climate. The understanding of latent heat (LE) flux can help to better describe the complex mechanisms and interactions between land and atmosphere. Despite its importance, accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) over the TP remains challenging. Satellite observations allow for ET estimation at high temporal and spatial s...
